Packages have gone missing from the Days Creek Post Office and an alleged burglary earlier this month is to blame.
Former Days Creek student and Milo resident Rossli Berlingeri was one of the victims of the alleged thefts, losing a $200 headset that was marked as delivered.
“I had a package arrive at the Post Office on Feb 5th,” Berlingeri said. “I went to get it on the 6th but arrived during lunch so I didn’t end up going to retrieve it from the post office until the 9th and when I arrived at the post office a mail clerk … said she could not find my package even though the system said it should be there on the shelf.”
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that there was an incident report, but that the report was incomplete and could not provide any more information.
According to Berlingeri, the bars on the window of the Post Office didn’t get put back on after a maintenance man fixed the windows to the bathroom, allowing the alleged burglar access.
The penalty for breaking into a federal building is five years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000.
A member of the Days Creek Charter School staff who could not comment officially said that break-ins have happened at the post office three times recently.
Office aide Dawna Connor’s family had several items stolen.
Tiller is the next town upriver with a post office. In-house substitute Reuben Stratford said Days Creek residents are now feeling what Tiller residents like himself have gone through for years with frequent break-ins taking place there too.
Berlingeri lamented that people mistakenly blamed a postal employee for the stolen packages.
“People shouldn’t take it out on the clerk,” he said. “It’s not her fault. She’s been working at the post office for years.”
