Days Creek is a rural town that not many know about, and the school is just the same. I moved from central Oregon, around the Bend area, more people know about it and where exchange students are more common, exchange students come every other year to other schools. Days Creek Charter School hasn’t had an exchange student since 2006.Â
When it comes to having an exchange student, it’s not just important for the experience but also to bring diversity to the school environment. At the age that current high school students are, it’s important to teach them in a diverse setting, so they know what is right and what is wrong to do in a public setting around people who were raised and currently live in all types of situations.
Days Creek has little to no diversity with the percentage of minorities only being about 24% of the school. so I think an exchange student would be a very positive addition to the community and school, the school and community can be exposed to different cultures. Rather than just our own which is embedded into our school along with the community.Â
So, this is why I think it’s a great idea to bring back exchange students to Days Creek Charter School. All we need is some interest from community members to sponsor a student, and for exchange students to be interested in coming here.Â
