Block Schedules going away?

Modified block schedule confusing for some, but allows for DiscoverU on Wednesdays

Mr. Giles questions sixth graders in his Social Studies 6 class earlier this year. On block days, this class meets for an hour, breaks for lunch, then returns to class for 43 minutes.

Since 2019 our school has been using a modified block schedule during school instead of the regular 7 period days. Mondays and Thursdays are the two days of the week that use the regular bell schedule. The classes on Tuesdays are periods 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th each class about 2 hours long. Wednesday is the same but with 1st, 2nd and 3rd period and at the end of the day we have 2 hours to do an extra class we get to choose in the beginning of the week. We call this Discover U, Discover U is someone that some of the students like while others dislike it.

Some students use this time to catch up on homework or even read a book. Some take advantage of this opportunity and take the culinary arts class or the pottery class. Every week something new is added to the list you can choose from. Students at Days Creek have mixed feelings about the block schedules and how DiscoveryU plays a part in school now.

“I like them and dislike them, I think they are good prep for college and help with more learning on one subject. But I also dislike them because they are long and exhausting,” said junior Kaleigh Loiodici after asked what she was thinking about the block schedule.

“ I have mixed feelings about them because it’s nice to sometimes have more time to work on things from a specific class, but if it’s a class I dont like then I don’t like it,” said Junior Mckenzie Park.

Some teachers also have an opinion on the block days, some hate it some don’t mind it, “I didn’t like it at first but I’ve gotten more used to it as I’ve become more used to it,” said history teacher Rob McCallum. “I think it’s hard on new teachers and we have a lot of those here at Days Creek.”

Our superintendent Steve Woods introduced this schedule to our school. Recently he has told the people of Days Creek that this will be his last year here at this school. So the questions about if the block schedule will continue or not are still up in the air. Will we stick to the same schedule we have for years? Will we still only have school Monday-Thursday? Or will everything stay the same? I guess we will find out next year.
