CHICO, Calif. – The Days Creek FFA Chapter took a team of four to Northern California earlier this month for a meat judging competition. It was an exciting trip for the four, and while none of the students placed, the trip marked a big step for the program.

“I thought the boys did really well; they went against some tough schools that wanted to be national champs,” FFA adviser Jonathan Lopez-Valadez said. “I think the trip was great because it was the first trip we took out of state in a while.”
Sophomore Chyson Hayes and freshmen Ezra Bloom, Owen Fain and Rowen White-Davis competed.
The trip was a six-hour drive and also included sightseeing. The contingent went roller skating and visited the National Yoyo Museum. They also learned that California charges a sales tax on its products.
In a meat judging competition, students evaluate beef carcasses for quality and yield grade; identify various meat cuts and place carcasses; and identify wholesale and/or retail cuts, according to the FFA. None of the Days Creek students placed.
“We tried our best out there,” White-Davis said. “We just didn’t have the resources to do better.’’
