Nearly 200 students dressed in blue corduroy packed the halls of Days Creek Charter School on Nov. 8. The big crowd came for the district ag sales and food science competition, as Days Creek FFA hosted its first competition for the first time in years.
“It was a stressful day, but the ag teachers came together to make it happen,” FFA advisor Jonathan Lopez said. “We want to thank all of our judges for coming to Days Creek and making this eventful day possible.”
In ag sales, students simulate various scenarios relating to livestock in front of a panel of judges. They are rated on how well they respond to the scenarios using vo-ag skills.
In food science, students are tested on knowledge of food products, presentation and food safety. According to FFA, participants also use their sensory skills to solve problems.
Sutherlin took first in both beginning and advanced food science competitions. Oakland swept ag sales.
For Days Creek, the beginning team of Noah Brown, Ezra Bloom and Alina Dobson placed third. In advanced food science, Days Creek’s team placed fifth. Freshman Joe Young placed sixth as an individual.
In beginning ag sales, Days Creek placed fourth. In advanced ag sales, Days Creek chapter president Kyra Light, a Riddle High School student, placed eighth individually.
Eleven schools were in attendance. FFA students also on the Days Creek football team competed early so that they could depart for their team’s state playoff game at South Wasco County.
