“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” certainly caused a lot of controversy. Some people said that they didn’t like Princess Peach being more independent, and Luigi taking on the role that peach played in the old Mario games. Which was to be Bowser’s prisoner.
In my opinion, these comments probably came from people who have played the old Super Mario Bros. games, and didn’t like the change in roles, as the role set has been the same for years.
On the other hand, however, people love the new take on these classic characters. Delving deeper into who they actually are instead of just simply giving them roles, like princess and hero.
My take on the movie is this : the graphics are very good, the integration of references to old Mario games is done well, the plot is very good considering that it is made to be a more “realistic” version, they made Bowser have a reason to hurt people (referring to Bowser’s love for Peach, clearly outlined in the song “Peaches” that he sings.)
In case you’re wondering, the movie is rated PG, it was released in mid-late 2023, and it is 1 hour and 32 minutes long.
If you look at the percent rating (higher being better) the actual audience liked the movie a lot giving the movie 96%. The critics, however, gave the movie 54%, which means they didn’t like it. The critics were most likely a part of the first group I mentioned at the beginning of this article, thinking that the plot would have been a lot more like the old Mario game’s plots. Save the princess.
